Product Description

CALFLO™ AF is a high-efficiency heat transfer fluid engineered for superior oxidation resistance in systems where exposure to air cannot be completely prevented. Manufactured by Petro-Canada, this advanced fluid starts with 99.9% pure HT hydrocracked base oils—crystal clear fluids produced using a patented purity process that eliminates performance-hindering impurities. Fortified with a proprietary additive system developed through more than 25 years of formulating expertise, CALFLO™ AF delivers significantly stronger resistance to oxidative breakdown than leading competitive fluids. Operating continuously at bulk temperatures up to 316°C (600°F), this fluid maintains excellent thermal efficiency while demonstrating markedly less viscosity increase, carbon residue formation, and sludge buildup compared to competitive products in independent laboratory testing. The result is extended fluid life, reduced change-out frequency, and lower overall operating costs—particularly valuable in open or semi-open systems where oxidation is the primary degradation mechanism.

  • Superior Oxidation Resistance: Patented additive technology provides significantly better protection against oxidative breakdown than leading competitive fluids, extending fluid life in systems with air exposure.
  • Ultra-Pure Base Oils: 99.9% pure HT hydrocracked base fluids, free of impurities that can accelerate degradation or reduce thermal efficiency.
  • Clean System Operation: Resists carbon residue and sludge formation, maintaining heat exchanger efficiency and minimizing costly deposit-related maintenance.
  • Non-Hazardous & Workplace-Safe: Virtually odorless, non-toxic, and not classified as hazardous under OSHA or WHMIS regulations—no special handling permits required.

Note: While CALFLO™ AF is highly resistant to oxidative breakdown, excessive air and water contamination can still reduce thermal efficiency and shorten fluid life over time. Where practical, inert gas blanketing of the expansion tank is recommended to guard against prolonged air and moisture exposure and maximize fluid service life. To ensure optimal system efficiency and fluid longevity, Petro-Canada recommends thorough system cleaning and flushing (using CALFLO™ Cleaning Fluid and CALFLO™ Flushing Fluid) to remove all contaminants, sludge, and varnish before charging with fresh CALFLO™ AF—particularly when converting from other fluid types. Avoid operating conditions that can accelerate fluid degradation, including thermal shocking from rapid temperature increases, hot spots on heating coils, and continuous operation above the maximum recommended bulk temperature. Annual fluid analysis is recommended to monitor fluid condition. CALFLO™ AF’s low vapor pressure minimizes leakage from control valves and pipe flanges, providing a cleaner and safer operating environment while reducing top-up requirements. The fluid’s natural lubricating properties help extend the service life of circulating pumps and other rotating equipment. Not classified as hazardous under OSHA (United States) or WHMIS (Canada) regulations; no special handling permits normally required for shipment or storage.
